9 Months into Lifestyle Change

Determined, Dedicated and Disciplined

68 pounds lost in 9 months, 7 dress sizes and now runs 20 miles weekly

My name is Madeline Aufseeser and I am a 46 year old woman living in Ft Lauderdale.  In December 2005, I found out that I needed major dental work.  Before the dental work could be preformed, my oral surgeon wanted me to go for a physical.  He was afraid that I might be pre-diabetic because I was so over weight.  If we found out that I was headed toward diabetes the dental work could not be done.

Meanwhile, I had not gone for a physical in five years and had continued to gain weight.  I started gaining weight in 1995, when my husband and I started a journey that would require us to move 7 times in 10 years.  Prior to this I met my husband in a gym in Manhattan; I ran 15 miles a week and was in great condition.

I was also a corporate executive and was following a successful career which moved us all around the country.  This resulted in high stress from the relocations and the requirements that came with work responsibilities.  Every time we moved, we went into temporary housing and ended up eating out almost every night for dinner.  Hence in the 10 year period from 1995, I went from 130 pounds to well over 200 lbs, a size 6 dress size to a 20w.  I used to be a fitness nut and now I could barely walk 30 minutes on the treadmill, huffing and puffing all the way.

When I went to the doctor for a physical he gave me the usual lecture about weight loss and did some blood work.  Luckily, I was not pre-diabetic but I did have high cholesterol with a 245 reading.  At that point, I knew I was going ahead with the dental work and making a huge investment, of time, money and pain.  I also decide that it was time to loose the weight and get back to being the person I was.

I bought a bunch of diet books, started drinking protein shakes and made it appoint to go to the gym every morning.  I created my own diet which was a combination of different ideas from each of the books I was reading.  First, I cut out all the processed foods (bread, pasta, potatoes…), refined sugars, caffeine, soda and fruit juice.  I bought two scales one to weigh myself and one to measure food portion sizes.  I reduced caloric intake to 1200 calories a day and I kept a daily diary.

Everything I did was recorded in the diary.  My daily routine now is:

  • Get up and weigh in
  • Go to the gym
  • Do 30-45 minutes of cardio work on either the elliptical machine or the treadmill
  • Do a weight lifting routine, alternating upper and lower body work every other day
  • After gym weigh in
  • Breakfast is an all natural whey protein shake (Sunrise Protein) with no sugar or additives and only 93 calories
  • At noon time eat a normal lunch, usually a small salad, 3 oz of protein in the form of chicken or fish and some berries
  • Mid day snack if I was hungry would be a handful of nuts
  • Eat dinner at 6 pm so as not to go to sleep on a full stomach
  • Dinner consists of lots of green vegetables and about 5 or 6 oz of protein and a piece of whole fruit
  • Before bed weigh in

From mid-December to May 1 I lost 41 pounds and had 3 front upper teeth extracted.  Friends at the gym were starting to do double takes and providing lots of positive reinforcement.  I was also now able to run a full 4 miles on the treadmill at a rate of 11.5 minutes per mile.  By September 1, I was down 60 pounds, had 2 more teeth extracted and had my cholesterol re-checked.  My cholesterol reading was now 192 and BMI was down to 22.7.  I started buying new clothes and my friends could not believe how “beautiful” I looked.  Every time, I received a compliment it spurred my drive on further to keep going.

On December 1, I was able to fit into a size 6, have a new set of upper front teeth and happily wear a bikini on the beach. As the snow birds come back to Florida, some of our friends hardly recognize me.  I feel great inside and out.  I love shopping for clothes and my new self confidence is brimming with pride.  Everyone asks how I did it and I always say that I was determined, dedicated and disciplined.  I did it all without a trainer or a nutritionist helping me.  I did have encouraging family, friends and neighbors who cheered me on.  I constantly thank my oral surgeon and dentist for providing the wake up call and contributing to my self created “extreme make-over”.
